UV Protection

Anyone who simply thinks about the way they look when buying sunglasses, is not doing their eyes any favours. Not only our skin needs protection in the summer – our eyes are also endangered by UV rays. Permanent damage to the lens and retina that impair vision is painless and take years to manifest. Therefore, it is particularly important that the eyes are protected by good sunglasses

If we look into the sun unprotected, the rays destroy our retina – sometimes irreparably. Naturally, our eyes react to much light: the pupils narrow, so that less light comes in, and we squint and pinch our eyes together. And yet UV rays penetrate through to our retina and cornea. Brief exposure to the sun can result in conjunctival irritation. The eye waters and becomes reddened. Prolonged exposure to sunlight increases the risk of corneal inflammation (keratitis). In people who spend a lot of time outdoors, the lens may become cloudy over the years (cataracts) – sight is restricted, a gray veil overlays the field of vision.

If we spend time by water or in the snow, light is additionally reflected – the result being: direct solar radiation plus indirect solar radiation. It is also particularly strong in the mountains: per 1000 meters of altitude, the intensity of UV radiation increases by around 20 percent. Sunglasses with high UV protection are therefore especially important for winter and water sports enthusiasts.

The right fit

When choosing glasses, do not just focus on how chic and modern they are, but also on the perfect fit. Ideally, sunglasses should cover the eye and even reach the upper edge to the eyebrow. Also on the side no sunlight should reach the eye.

Hip models with small round lenses are therefore only partially suitable. If you are not sure which type of fit is right for you, just go to a specialist store and get advice.

The right colours of the lenses

What many do not know: The tint of the lenses says nothing about the UV protection. It only reduces the light visible to the eye. Some lens tints are particularly good for the eyes, while others can even limit eyesight.

Choosing a brown or gray tint is not a bad decission. Trendy glasses with red, green or yellow lenses can even have an effect on your reactions. Better to choose sunglasses with a colourful frame before reaching for colourful glasses.

Finding the right children’s sunglasses

Especially with children, you should choose sunglasses very carefully. Because children are even more vulnerable to UV rays than adults, and rely on their parents to provide them with adequate protection.

Since children romp and play a lot, it makes sense to buy glasses made of unbreakable plastic. They can sometimes be dropped or collide with balls without fear of injury.

Just try a few models in the shop, and you’ll see which one suits your child best, because they should be safe but not too tight.
